Lead screws provide very accurate precision for motion systems. The lead screw is manufactured on the precision lathes with tight tolerances. The trade-off is that lead screws are slower than belt drives, which are extremely light weight and fast. The lead screw must rotate with a nut moving along with it. There is a limitation as to how fast the lead screw can turn before the screw vibrates and in extreme cases causes a whipping action. Lead screw machines are limited in speed by the manufacturer to prevent any loss to accuracy. The limitations are set in velocity, acceleration and deceleration.
The lead screw motion systems below provide motion in several methods. One method, is where the one lead screw moves a gantry from one side of a table to the other. The second lead screw moves the laser focus head back and forth along the gantry. A second method is different from the one mentioned, because the table is moved underneath the gantry. In the second method, the laser beam length is maximally changed by the length of the gantry. Where, in the first method, the laser beam length to the focus head is changed maximally by the length of the table and its width.
For the machinery below, first select your laser type, then choose the machine, considering beam path variation and accuracy requirements. It is important to note that a smaller table size is more accurate overall, than a larger table.
Designed for cutting accuracy, the CS13 Series offers two CO2 laser powers and your choice of cutting areas, 1.3m x 1.3 m (51" x 51") or 2.5m x 2.5m (99" x 99"). In this design, the CO2 laser is rides on the gantry. The maximum speed is 50-80 mm/sec or up to 3 inches per second.

Lead Screws provide precision motion, with a limitation of speed. Belt drive systems are much faster. Lead screw systems are more accurate, and maintain accuracy, while some belt systems can loose accuracy as the belt stretches over time. Lead screws are typically utilized in applications where precision is required, as they cost more than belt drive systems.Bell Lasers LLC
